There are several ways a GM can protect players on expiring contracts.
The first is to offer a Max Contract on a player that has an expiring contract. The max contract amount is currently set at 20M for the duration of 5 years. (No Limit on how many max contracts you want to offer, but too many of these and GM's will run out of cap space fast.)
The second way is to use Restricted Free Agent Tags, every GM gets two per year (See Tags folder).
The third is the Overseas Tag (See Tags folder).
