I want to take a moment to explain contract options
Team Option: is a contract year where the current team that owns the player has the exclusive rights either to keep the player at the current contract on the book, or let him go without cap penalty hit.
Player Option: is a contract where the player has the option to stay or go on his current team. For example: Andre Igoudala is currently on a player option and at some point during the off-season he will declare if he will opt in or out of that contract. If Iggy opts to stay in Denver next year, then the current GM in this league retains him at the current year contract price. If Iggy opts out of his contract, then the current GM loses Iggy to Unrestricted Free Agency.
*SIDE NOTE: I will allow owners to use a RFA Tag to protect players that choose to opt out. Just remember that the off-season could be a long process and we're all going to have to be patient
Qualifying Offer: is when a player is on a restricted free agent contract. And the current GM that has his rights has the option to offer that player a QO or not. If the GM wants to retain the player in question, he needs to exercise that option. When you exercise that option you will also see a salary number associated with that player. When that QO is offered, that player becomes a restricted free agent. All other GM's that wish to try and acquire a player that has been offered QO will have one secret contract offer that will be submitted to the league commissioner that can be no lower in salary than the salary number associated with that player. For example Nokola Pekovic is on a 6.05M QO, any other owner that wants to acquire him will have to offer a minimum of 6.05 per year. After all bids have been taken by the commissioner, the team with the highest contract offer temporarily wins that player. The commissioner will then contact the original team that had placed the QO on the particular player in question and they will have the final option to match that contract and ultimately retain that player if they so choose. If they choose to match that contract, then the team with QO retains that player. If they choose not to match that contract, then the team with highest bid wins that player.
Important: A team that is matching a contract must take the contract how ever it is constructed with no alterations. For example: if a team wishing to acquire a player with QO decides to front load a contract, or back loan a contract, the team with the QO must accept exactly how the best contract offer was constructed. You will not be allowed to rework the numbers in a manner better fitted for you cap situation.
RFA Tag: a restricted free agent tag will work identical as the QO, only that it can be placed on any player on your roster who's contract expired the year before. For example: Jose Calderon's contract expired at the end of this year with his salary at 8M. If the Thunder choose to place a free agent tag on him, he will become a restricted free agent with a salary cap number of 8M and any offers to acquire him would start at an average of that 8 million per year. Once all secret bids have been submitted, the team with the RFA Tag has the option to to match.
I hope this helps... please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
